My essay, “Gender Theory: Femininities and Masculinities,” has been published in the Blackwell collection, A Companion to Literary Theory (Wiley Blackwell, 2018). This book presents a range of established and emerging fields of literary criticism and is written in an accessible manner that would appeal to undergraduate students, graduate students, and faculty looking to familiarize themselves with different traditions of research.

First page of Gender Theory: Femininities and Masculinities

Abstract: Gender theory from the 1990s through the present has been an interdisciplinary field that grew out of women’s studies to encompass a range of subfields, some of which have become fields in their own right. By examining masculinity studies, transgender studies, and girlhood studies through the rise of dedicated journals, anthologies, and conferences, this chapter traces the scholars responsible for generating these fields.
